Quarter life crisis

Quarter life Crisis
It is when you stop going along with the crowd and start realizing that there are a lot of things about yourself that you didn't know and may or may not like. You start feeling insecure and wonder where you will be in a year or two, but then get scared because you barely know where you are now.
You start realizing that people are selfish and that, maybe, those friends that you thought you were so close to aren't exactly the greatest people you have ever met and the people you have lost touch with are some of the most important ones. What you do not realize is that they are realizing that too and are not really cold or catty or mean or insincere, but that they are as confused as you.
You look at your job. It is not even close to what you thought you would be doing or maybe you are looking for one and realizing that you are going to have to start at the bottom and are scared. You miss the comforts of college, of groups, of socializing with the same people on a constant basis. But then you realize that maybe they weren't so great after all.
You are beginning to understand yourself and what you want and do not want. Your opinions have gotten stronger. You see what others are doing and find yourself judging a bit more than usual because suddenly you realize that you have certain boundaries in your life and add things to your list of what is acceptable and what is not.
You are insecure and then secure. You laugh and cry with the greatest force of your life. You feel alone and scared and confused. Suddenly change is the enemy and you try and cling on to the past with dear life but soon realize that the past is drifting further and further away and there is nothing to do but stay where you are or move forward.
You get your heart broken and wonder how someone you loved could do such damage to you or you lay in bed and wonder why you can't meet anyone decent enough to get to know better. You love someone but maybe love someone else too and cannot figure out why you are doing this because you are not a bad person.
One night stands and random hook ups start to look cheap and getting wasted and acting like an idiot starts to look pathetic. You go through the same emotions and questions over and over and talk with your friends about the same topics because you cannot seem to make a decision. You worry about loans and money and the future and making a life for yourself and while wining the race would be great, right now you'd just like to be a contender! What you may not realize is that everyone reading this relates to it. We are in our best of times and our worst of times, trying as hard as we can to figure this whole thing out.

Sitting here at Heathrow airport ,I couldn’t help but wonder why is it that when people travel away from home they realize what they cherish the most at home. No matter how many days in advance you know you have to leave at a particular date or no matter how well you have planned your trip in advance, there is always a final goodbye on the last day.
This time around I didn’t sleep like usual while waiting for my connecting flight,i started looking around at all the goodbyes and farewells all around me,the mother waving her daughter off to college, the businessman kissing his kid goodbye, people going on vacations and their family members coming to see them off.
The international flights that I usually take always seem to have someone who is traveling for the first time on one and the look on their face is priceless, awestruck and excited it seems like a new world awaits them with open doors and they seem like a newborn looking inquisitively at what the world has to offer them.
It was on one of such flights I saw her,she seemed excited and nervous, like someone going on the stage for the first time.To say she was pretty would be an understatement, her face stood out from the usual crowd I meet while flying. She was strapped in her seat by the time I took a seat besides her and gave me a nervous smile and looked ahead to listen to the air stewardess giving her usual safety information about the flight, she listened carefully preparing her mind to know what to do in case something happened on the flight.
I had heard about the three second rule about talking to a girl for the first time,it goes something like this,”when you meet a girl for the first time say something in the first three seconds to her after your first eye contact”i think three hundred had passed and I didn’t say anything,my friend Vikram has a rule book with thousands of such rules in it in, his maintains and he swears by all the tricks that have worked for him.I was thumbing through the in-flight magazine and wondering what should I begin with when she asked me where I was headed.Thats when it all began....
Though I was headed to join my ship anchored all the way in Philadelphia,i chose to ignore this wee bit of relevant information to her and just told her that im headed to Philadelphia. She was headed the same way and seemed pretty excited to have company all the way on a tedious 16 hour of a commute in economy class.
“Oh,by the way im Nandita”she said.
“Im Varun, nice to meet you”.Oh man why did I have sound like a perfect gentleman at the wrong time always,i should have used some flair, said something funny or laid some mystery for the groundwork to start, what groundwork, from the looks of it my work was 6 feet below the ground before it started.
“This is my first flight”Nandita said.
“Well I could guess from the looks of it that this way your first international flight”i replied with a smile...yeah im a player.
“No u didn’t get me,this is like my first flight ever”Nandita said.
After all the reduction in air fares all throughout India and countless number of people who used to plan trips by trains months in advance, started traveling by flights, this girl had never been on one, that was kinda strange and I found it weird,i should have taken this as a warning from my brain but boys will be boys and I kept the conversation flowing like the welcome drink the stewardess was pouring us.
We kept chatting throughout the flight on everything under the sun we could think about,i didn’t pay much attention to the girly topics she ventured upon from time to time but some things got registered in my brain:
she was single
she seemed to be aware of my interest in her
she was hot
she was an IT professional going to the states for her first stint abroad
and yes did I mention “she was hot” and pretending to be unaware of it even though I knew that she knew that she was and was just playing along a false staccato.
We got in Philadelphia and I parted ways with her,not taking her number with me because I knew that it was highly unprobable that we would meet again ever in fact, and went about looking for my suitcase on the unloading dock area.
Now usually I can spot my suitcase from a mile away, the color being red and my purpose of buying it was the same because in the hundreds of suitcases and strollers that come down the dock, its always better to see yours easily and pick it and make a move as soon as possible.I picked mine up after going through three other red suitcases owned by some young american girls and made a mental note to myself to avoid buying red of anything next time over.
Nandita was right behind me when I took my trolley to the exit gate and I never saw her coming, she didn’t have any luggage on her, which was absurd,i asked her whether she had lost her luggage and she simply said no and said she travelled light, yeah, for a girl who has never traveled abroad till today, and now she has rules set for traveling too, amazing what girls can come up with.
As I stood waiting at the airport for my pick-up,she casually strolled by and asked me about some address in the city,i had no idea but out of politeness I offered her a ride, which from the smile on her face was exactly what she wanted from me.
She received quite a few calls on her cell while we were going towards the city center, and kept fidgeting with her nails all the while. She got down at the Hilton and dropped a post it with her number scribbled onto it into my lap and said bye and went her own way,i dropped the post it in my backpack and forgot about it till today, this happened a year ago and I was in Philadelphia again this year and had a week to spend here before proceeding to my ship.
I called the number up from my room and after a couple of rings she picked up,i felt awkward after telling who I was and considered explaining the flight when we met last year but to my surprise she remembered me and agreed to pick me in the evening from my hotel itself.
I was having my last marlboro outside the hotel when a jet black sedan stopped next to the sidewalk,it was a Bentley and chauffeur driven, I had barely managed to have two drags from the smoke between my lips when she stepped out of the car, this cant be Nandita,no ways!!I know IT people earn a lot but this represented a completely different lifestyle for someone in that kinda profession.
“Hi,Varun,hop in”she said.
Now I think my face spoke a thousand words when I sat down inside the car next to her,and she understood and told me that she was doing pretty well and that America was treating her well,i couldn’t deny, she was doing well, extremely well from the looks of it.
We went to a TGIF and had some beers before munching on some pizza,i noticed the Louis Vitton pumps she was wearing and a watch from the same brand,God I should switch to IT,look at how well people do in one year itself.
She kept looking at her watch after dinner and I presumed she had to be somewhere so I told her that we should leave as she has to go to work tomorrow and I just have to find something to while away my time in the hotel, she dropped me off at the hotel and asked whether she could come up for a coffee,i didn’t think much of it and welcomed her anyways.
The room wasn’t much but wasn’t in the usual mess that my rooms turn out to be after some days of living in,she sat on the easy chair and I proceeded to make some coffee,we got to talking again and she told me something that didn’t come as a shock to me after what I saw today.
“Varun, you know by now that I don’t only work in the IT job that I was talking about ......

Customizing gmail

Did you know you can customize a little of your Gmail inbox by changing the so-called Gmail web clips? Web clips are the little pieces of text just above your e-mail inbox. You would think it was just a regular place to display Google’s advertising, but if you pay attention you might see some other messages come by too.
These messages can be customized. You can for instance add the RSS feed of your favorite blog or news site or add favorite quotes or other wisdom. For more information on what RSS feeds are see this article.
It could become a bit of a distraction, but I think it’s a nice variation for your inbox. For people who practically live inside their Gmail inbox, this is nice and it could even make you smarter by displaying trivia (or look smarter if you memorize the quotes).

They work like a mini one line RSS reader. You can click the link to read the article. You’ll see from what source the link is and how long ago it was published. Click the arrows < and > to browse through the different sources and links. Customizing is easy:
Sign in to Gmail.
Click Settings at the top of any Gmail page, and open the Web Clips tab.
Browse popular clips by selecting a topic link along the left. Search for feeds by entering topics that interest you – use this feature like you would Google Search. Or, enter specific feed URLs.
Click Add next to the clips you’d like to see in Gmail.
You can add specific feed URLs by entering them in the search box on the left. The feed URL of MakeUseOf is for instance Which you can copy and paste into the search field and your favorite tech tips will scroll by in your inbox. Another interesting one is the feed of our Geeky Fun collection: Gmail web clips add these to a list.
From this list random items are chosen to display, together with some of the advertising that is already there. You’ll see the list under “My Clips“. You’re not stuck with the web clips Google has already chosen for you. If you’re not that much interested in cooking or one of the others, simply click remove on the right. Having a small list makes every source come up more often.

Some other cool ones are quotes or trivia such as quote of the day, Quotes4all, TriviaTidbit and Funny Quote of the Day (right-click and choose “copy link“). Enter a word you are interested in in the search box and see what they have.
Of course you already know about the themes that Gmail has enabled to further customize your inbox. After rocking Terminal for a couple of days myself I have been using Ninjas to my full satisfaction.
For some more very convenient little Gmail tips you might not know about, see this article on MakeUseOf and everything else on Gmail. And of course let me know if you have found some cool web clips that are not in the suggested lists yet.

Pop culture "The snuggie emerges"

Very rarely do you come across something that seems absurd at first but slowly u see what it is in the light and feel the way i did when i first heard of a snuggie.
What is a snuggie???
Well its nothing more than a blanket with sleeves, someone must be fond of reading books and realised that the one issue that u have when you are in a warm cozy bed and curling up to a favourite book and a hot cuppa coffe is tha the bloody blanket keeps slipping...well the inventors(if i may call this an invention)of snuggoe worked this out and made sleeves into a blanket, sounds silly??did to me too..till i found out that 4 million of these have been sold and are a major pop culture icon for 2008 and 2009.
Its not expensive either and all i read is great reviews for it,staying in a cold place myself i wish i had one of these myself, but unfortunately its not availible in india for the time being, ill console myslef with a slipping blanket till it reaches our shores..for more see
and have a look at simplicity of an idea that takes off at full blast at times.

Apple rocks the september keynote

Well well well
most of us have been waiting for the rumored ipad to surface up on the keynote this year, which in fact im still keeping my fingers crossed too as the keynote is still midway and there is still time for more....
but as tradition goes,Mr.Jobs is back with ONE MORE THING and its cameras on the nanos, wow we really needed that feature and also the fm radio finally comes to the nano along with a built in pedometer for use with nike +....
The features are : 2.2 inch display, glossy colors, microphone/speaker, voiceover, fm radio, video those of you who were waiting to but a nano can go for it now..cos its better value for money anyday...
Apple also announced iPod classic at 160GB-- same thin size, same price ($249),so the rumours of it being phased out can be cancelled for now.
The itouch comes for $399 for 64GB, $299 for 32GB, and $199 for 8GB,im pretty dissed at this cos me and a couple of friends just bought itouches for 50$ more a month back ,should always listen to rumours ahh when it comes to apple.
Im only covering the hardware in this blog, itunes 9 comes out with itunes LP and also os3.1 for the iphone and the itouch, that ill cover later.....

Eating out in shimla

Well for starters..shimla is a place where you do get different kinds of cuisines and lots of variety in those too,but among the countless number of places there are few which will make your trip worthwhile and droolworthy ...
Id say tibetan food does really well here, and momos, thupkas and soups are really good in a place called china town just a stones throw away from a really big eat out called baljees, even though china town is a small joint the momos and the accompanying sauces are to die for,try the fried variety, its worth taking a risk.
For regular indian food,PLAZA fares pretty well, though the service is agonizingly slow but the wait for the fresh kebabs with the even fresher mint chutney is worth it,you get really nice paranthas here and the onion kulcha and the onion salad are some things you will find on each diners table.
Continental palate is difficult to say,but COMBERMERE is a nice place, their baking section is awesome and the ambience of their rooftop terrace is pretty good for a late evening or mid day hang out.
